This is Treblinka, a sculpture by the Soviet artist Vadim Sidur, created in 1966 and installed here in 1979 as one of West Berlin’s earliest Holocaust memorials. Four human bodies are stacked in a cross-shaped tower; the lowest figure, a woman, is still alive, straining against the weight of the dead above her, a compressed monument to all the people sent eastward by decisions made in offices around this square.

You’ve walked only a few hundred metres, but you’ve moved between prisons: one turned into a boutique hotel, the other frozen mid-scream in bronze.
