A few doors farther along, on the left, tucked between apartment blocks and an unassuming ice cream parlor, stands the Klick Kino and Café, one of Berlin’s smallest and oldest surviving cinemas.
Continue straight while I tell you about it.
This is what we call in Berlin a Laden Kino. It was also an Adult Cinema back in the 70s, when this area was more of a red light district.
Let's hold off on that for now... I had this whole shtick about the Weimar era cinemas, but I'm going to use the remaining 181 words I have until we get to the next stop as an opportunity to tell you about a woman who lived not too far away from here at, Gierke Platz, not far from Schloss Charlottenburg.
Her real name was Kunigunde Orlamünde, but she called herself Undine von Blankenschiff. She managed to reach 79 on Germany’s Top 100 charts in June of 1998, It was a single called “Ballad of Drowned Bride”, I know this because I once bought a cassette at this used record shop, where I’m going to take you next.
It's hard to describe the music. I'm pretty sure I would run into rights issues if I were just to play some of it here, but I'm going to risk it anyway and play you a short sample while you keep walking to the street corner ahead, and hopefully I won't be sued by the estate.
